Converter vs. Inverter: What’s the Difference?
I had a little reminder the other day about slowing down before answering questions online.
I was reading through an RV group on Facebook when someone posted a photo and asked a question. I took a quick look, answered, and realized afterward that I hadn’t looked closely enough at the picture. I mixed up an inverter and a converter.
It happens.
The post reminded me that the two terms are easy to confuse, especially for new RV owners, so I thought I’d put together a simple explanation of the difference.
This is an oversimplified explanation, but it covers the basics.
What Does a Converter Do?
Nearly every RV has a converter.
When you’re plugged into shore power or running a generator, the converter takes 120-volt AC power and converts it into 12-volt DC power.
That 12-volt power is used to:
- Charge your RV batteries.
- Run your interior lights.
- Operate the water pump.
- Power vent fans.
- Supply other 12-volt accessories.
In other words, when you’re plugged into campground power, the converter keeps your batteries charged while supplying power to your RV’s 12-volt systems.
What Does an Inverter Do?
An inverter does the opposite.
It takes 12-volt DC power from your batteries and converts it into 120-volt AC power.
That allows you to use household appliances when you’re camping without hookups.
Depending on the size of the inverter and your battery bank, you may be able to run:
- Televisions
- Coffee makers
- Microwaves
- Residential refrigerators
- Laptop computers
- Other small household appliances
The amount of power available depends on both the size of the inverter and the capacity of your batteries.
Does Every RV Have Both?
Almost every RV comes equipped with a converter.
Not every RV has an inverter.
If you primarily camp in campgrounds with electrical hookups, you may never need one.
However, if you enjoy boondocking and don’t want to rely entirely on a generator, an inverter can be a worthwhile addition to your RV.
Why It Matters
Knowing the difference can make troubleshooting electrical problems much easier.
If your batteries aren’t charging while you’re plugged into shore power, you’re probably looking at a converter issue.
If you’re trying to use a household appliance while camping without hookups, you’ll need an inverter—and enough battery capacity to support it.
Understanding whether you’re dealing with 120-volt AC or 12-volt DC is often the first step in solving the problem.
One Last Thought
Even after years of RVing, I still learn something new once in a while. This was simply a reminder not to answer too quickly and to take a closer look before offering advice.
