The Cover Is Finally Off!

Even though they’re still predicting more cold weather and even a little snow this week, we decided enough was enough.

On April 10, we took the cover off the fifth wheel.

I think we’ve both reached the point where we’re ready to say goodbye to winter. It seems like it’s been hanging on forever. Maybe it’s just because we’re anxious to get back out camping, open the windows, and enjoy some fresh air again.

This year we had a little help from our good friends, Joe and Kathy.

They’ll be taking delivery of their new fifth-wheel toy hauler in the next couple of weeks, so helping remove our cover also gave them a chance to see what they’ll be doing each spring and fall.

Having four people made the job much easier. I stayed on the roof, making sure the cover didn’t snag on anything, while the others watched each side as we worked it off the trailer.

Everything went smoothly.

Within about 20 minutes the cover was off, rolled up, and loaded into the truck.

While I was on the roof, I also took the opportunity to inspect the seals and seams. Fortunately, everything looked to be in great shape after another Minnesota winter.

Our Experience with the Cover

We purchased our RV cover from CarCovers.com and chose their Gold Shield model.

This was its second winter protecting our fifth wheel, spending roughly six months each year on the trailer.

Overall, we’ve been very pleased with it.

The material still looks nearly new, with very little fading or weathering.

The first winter, we developed a small wear spot where a roof drain spout rubbed through after a protective pool noodle slipped out of place. Using the repair patch included with the cover, I was able to make a quick repair that lasted through this past winter without any problems.

This spring, however, we found two new areas where the cover had worn through.

We take the time to pad sharp corners and secure the cover properly, but strong winds throughout the winter still caused some rubbing in a couple of locations.

Lifetime Warranty

They requested a few photos of the damaged areas, which I emailed to them.

Later that same day, they responded and approved a warranty replacement.

The only cost to us was a reasonable shipping charge, which I felt was more than fair considering they were replacing the entire cover.

Within minutes of finishing the phone call, I received a shipping confirmation for the replacement.
