Easy Day-No Such Thing

On our trip to Door County, we stopped in Appleton, Wisconsin, for a big fireworks festival that I have already mentioned on the site. Our next stop was Brussels, Wisconsin, a mere 50 miles away. It seemed a little strange to move such a short distance, but we were looking forward to an easy travel day.

We had a calm morning to pack up since we couldn’t check in at our new campground until 1 p.m. We took advantage of every minute of our noon checkout time, then stopped for some groceries along the way before driving the last 30 miles.

Then we got a call from our travel friends, who were only a mile or so behind us. They had suffered a blowout on their trailer, and it turned out to be a catastrophic tire failure. Thankfully, the blown tire was on the passenger side, so they were able to safely pull onto the shoulder and change it. The tire took out some of the skirting along the side of the trailer and severed the wiring for the trailer’s turn signals and brakes. After getting the tire changed, Joe was able to splice the wires back together and get everything working again.

A Wisconsin State Trooper stopped to assist, using his squad car and emergency lights to help alert passing drivers to the situation.

It just goes to show that any travel day can bring challenges you didn’t foresee. Joe and Kathy handled it the way they handle other problems. They dealt with it, got things taken care of, and moved on. It helps to be prepared with the tools and safety equipment you may need.
