Don’t Do It.
It’s really that simple.
I came across a post in an RV Facebook group today from someone who was new to towing a fifth wheel. They asked whether people ride in the trailer while traveling down the road.
Fortunately, the overwhelming response was, “Don’t do it.” As with any online forum, however, there were a few people who said it was fine as long as it was legal in your state.
Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.
In my opinion, it’s a very bad idea.
Why would you put anyone, especially someone you love, in the back of a trailer with no airbags, no seat belts, and no real protection if something goes wrong? If you’re involved in a serious accident, the people riding in the trailer could suffer severe injuries or worse.
One response in the discussion really stood out. A man admitted that after repeated pleading from his children, he finally let them ride in the fifth wheel. Not long afterward, he decided to ride back there himself while someone else drove the truck.
He said that experience changed his mind forever.
The bouncing, swaying, and violent movement convinced him it was something he would never allow again. It was the last time anyone rode in the back of his trailer while it was moving.
No matter what the law says where you’re traveling, my advice is simple:
Be safe. Don’t put your family or friends at unnecessary risk. Everyone belongs in the tow vehicle, properly seated and wearing a seat belt.
