Our First Winter as Snowbirds
Well, we made it to Florida in October, although we did return to Minnesota for a while because of some family matters, Thanksgiving, and Christmas before heading back south in January.
We officially completed our first winter as snowbirds.
I can honestly say we didn’t miss the snow. Even more importantly, we didn’t drive each other crazy living in the RV for such an extended period.
We got pretty good at the “RV dance” of moving around each other, respected the occasional need for a little personal space, and truly enjoyed spending so much time together. Whether we were out exploring on the motorcycle or simply sitting under the awning playing cards, it was exactly what we had hoped retirement would be.
One of the unexpected highlights was the people we met. We’ve made some wonderful friends, most of whom are at the same stage in life—retired and enjoying the opportunity to spend the winter somewhere warm. As I write this, many have already started making their way north. Some have family obligations waiting for them, while others are taking their time and visiting friends and places along the way.
This week, our focus has shifted to preparing for the trip home. The truck and fifth wheel need a good cleaning, supplies have to be packed away, and everything needs one final inspection before we hit the road.
As I’ve mentioned before, we’re already planning to return next winter, although with one change. Instead of spending six months here, we’ll stay about four months. Minnesota has some beautiful weather in the fall, and leaving the trailer on a site here during December while we’re back home just doesn’t make financial sense. It ends up being expensive storage for something we’re not using.
Our plan next year is to stage the RV somewhere along the route in late fall, far enough south that we don’t have to worry about severe freezing temperatures. The idea of hooking up a fifth wheel when it’s below zero just doesn’t appeal to me. Cold weather can make plastics, seals, and other components less forgiving, so staging the RV seems like the better option for us.
Overall, I’d call our first season as snowbirds a success. We learned a lot, met some great people, and confirmed that this is a lifestyle we really enjoy.
Now we just have to make the trip home.
On the way, we’re planning to spend a few days in Hot Springs to explore the area before continuing north.
